Flemish pioneering companies have built up considerable know-how and some have grown into world players on the market. For the Hoet Couture eyewear collection, Patrick Hoet uses the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technique which consists in creating a product layer by layer by smelting powder particles together using a laser beam. Hoet uses titanium for the purpose. This makes it possible to do customized work and to create his shapes and structures that could not be done with traditional techniques.
Moreover, the process produces almost no waste, and large stocks are no longer necessary. In traditional eyewear manufacture, some 30 to 40 per cent remain unsold, representing a significant loss in resource materials and energy.
